Hens and Chicks
Hens and chicks (Sempervivum tectorum) are succulent evergreen perennials. The name comes from their growth habit. A main rosette develops (the “hen”) and daughter plants (offsets) are connected by horizontal short stems, and the smaller “chicks” develop their own roots and cluster into a ground cover (mat forming).
Hens and chicks are added to a garden for their interesting appearance, their hardiness, and ease of care. They do well in dry or rocky/gravelly soil and should not be overwatered. They are sun-lovers and keep their appearance, even in drought conditions.
In summer, some of the hens will develop long stalks and later yet, short-lived flowers develop. They are a little ungainly, but interesting. We cut down the stalks after flowering has ceased.
There are a number of varietals of Sempervivum that can be purchased. We find that we have an abundance of plants and we tend to fill them into spaces around rocks, walkways, and borders, as needed. Hens and chicks are a welcome addition to the garden.
