Some Native Flowers for the Garden
A Gardener’s Journal is a companion website to A Wildflower Journal, which features native plants spotted on the trails, tracks, and waterways of our area. Most garden flowers are cultivars, but a number are also native plants to our area. There are posts on the following wildflowers on A Wildflower Journal. These can be found in our home garden, from seed, from bedding plants, or from transplants. Click a link for the full article on each of these native flowers:
Some images of these flowers are shared here, taken by the author. Click an image for a lightbox (larger) view.
Some planting tips for these three native plants:
- Both yarrow and goldenrod are well suited to dry, out of the way, sunny spots. They require little care, but they may may propagate themselves, so place them carefully.
- We like the seedheads from goldenrod so we prefer to leave them alone until the end of fall.
- Blue flax has feathery foliage which retains some appeal after flowering. It can be planted in dry open spots too, but our favorite spots are on the edges of borders, in front of taller plants.
More native plants will be featured over the winter months.
